Turn a photo into a cross-stitch pattern: step by step
Stitching your own photo is easier than it sounds. Three things matter: a suitable image, the right size and not too many colours. The converter takes care of turning it into squares and thread numbers.

Choosing the right image
- Clear shapes and good contrast: the subject should stand out clearly from the background.
- A calm background: clutter turns into many single stitches in changing colours.
- Close to the subject: crop the image so that what matters fills the frame.
- For portraits, even light without hard shadows on the face.
Setting the size in stitches
The width in stitches decides how much detail is kept and how large the piece becomes. On 14 count Aida, 14 stitches make one inch: 150 stitches across come to just under 11 inches. A simple design needs 80 to 120 stitches, a portrait more like 150 to 250.
Limiting the number of colours
Every extra colour means another skein, more thread changes and more single stitches. Illustrations and lettering need 10 to 20 colours, photos 30 to 60. More colours rarely make the pattern nicer, but always more work.
How to proceed in the converter
- Choose an image and crop it.
- Set the width in stitches.
- Pick a thread brand and limit the number of colours.
- Add outlines as backstitch if you like.
- Check the preview and merge similar colours.
- Save the pattern, print it or start straight away in the stitching editor.
The conversion runs in your browser. Your photo is not uploaded.
Checking the preview properly
- Look from a distance: a stitched piece works like a mosaic and only becomes a picture from further away.
- Watch faces: eyes and mouth need enough stitches. If they look blurred, enlarge the pattern.
- Single scattered stitches in the background often disappear when you merge similar colours.
Planning fabric and thread
Once the pattern is settled, calculate the fabric size and thread needs. Allow two to three inches of margin all round so the piece can be stretched and framed. The thread key of the pattern doubles as your shopping list.
Frequently asked questions
Which photos are suitable for cross stitch?
Images with a clear subject, good contrast and a calm background. Very dark or blurred photos produce muddy patterns.
How many colours does a photo pattern need?
Usually 30 to 60. With fewer colours the pattern is easier to stitch but loses subtle gradations.
How large should a portrait be?
At least about 150 stitches wide so that the eyes and mouth get enough stitches.
Does the conversion cost anything?
Without an account you can convert two images per day. With an account this limit no longer applies.
