Can I replace DMC with Anchor or Madeira?

Yes, for most colours there is a very similar shade. Replace a colour throughout the whole design and not just in one part, because small differences show when they sit side by side.

How accurate is the conversion?

Rows marked “Chart” come from a conversion chart. All others are calculated from screen colours and are therefore an approximation. Check important colours against the real thread, ideally in daylight.

How do I convert a whole pattern?

Take the thread key of your pattern and look up every number in the chart. Note the new numbers in the key before you go shopping, and stay with one brand within a design.

Why is there no exact equivalent for every colour?

Every manufacturer dyes its own range. Some shades do not exist in another brand at all; the nearest shade is then visibly lighter, darker or of a different tint.
