Outline

A line around parts of a design, usually worked in backstitch with dark thread over the finished cross stitches.

Outlines separate colour areas and make details such as eyes, leaf veins or lettering readable. They are stitched last, often with a single strand in black or a dark shade of the neighbouring colour. The xstitchr converter can add outlines automatically between contrasting colour areas.
