Holbein stitch (double running stitch)

A line stitch made of two passes of running stitch: the return journey fills the gaps of the first.

First every second stitch length is worked, then the gaps are filled on the way back. The line looks like backstitch but lies flatter and is identical on front and back. That makes Holbein stitch typical of blackwork and of pieces whose reverse stays visible.
